Hackers Steal Framingham Heart Study Data

FRAMINGHAM, MA - On Sunday, September 8, 2024, data related to participants of The Framingham Heart Study was stolen from a Boston University (BU) server.

Data for all 15,448 participants was involved in the breach.

Hackers gained access to the server, compressed files containing personal data of all participants and downloaded the archive containing copies of all participants personal data.

According to information posted on BU Today, the stolen data "may have included name, address, date of birth, telephone number, email address, sex, race, ethnicity, self-reported broad income and occupational categories, signature, and medical information". Additionally, approximately 300 participant's Social Security Numbers were included in the data.

BU and FHS officials have also notified Federal law enforcement, as well as the National Institute of Health (NIH) / National Heart Lung Blood Institute (NHLBI), and U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).
