Auditions for "The Jungle Book" for Grades 3-8
Open Auditions for students in grades 3-8 for Disney's "The Jungle Book". Wed. Sept. 1, from 6-8. Auditions are at the Performing Arts Center of MetroWest, 140 Pearl St., Framingham.Rehearsals Wednesdays 5:30-7:30 and Sundays 3-5 at PAC. Bill Staines with Mary Pratt and Terence Hegarty opening
Anyone not familiar with the music of Bill Staines is in for a special treat. For over 35 years, Bill has traveled throughout North America, singing his songs and delighting audiences at festivals, folksong societies, colleges, concerts, clubs and coffeehouses. A New England native, Bill became involved with the Boston-Cambridge folk scene in the early 1960's and, has continued to earn an international reputation as an artist Bill sings traditional tunes, country ballads and original songs and delights in having the audience participate. Weaving a magical blend of wit and gentle humor, he is rightfully one of the most popular performers on the folk music circuit.Singing mostly his own songs, he has become one of the most popular singers on the folk music circuit today and averages around 200 concert dates a year.Bill weaves a magical blend of wit and gentle humor into his performances, and as one reviewer wrote, "he has a sense of timing to match the best stand-up comic." His music is a slice of Americana, reflecting with the same ease, his feelings about the prairie people of the Midwest or the adventurers of the Yukon.Interspersed between original songs, Bill also includes songs ranging from traditional folk tunes to more contemporary country ballads and delights in having the audience participate in many of the numbers. He may even do a yodeling tune or two - having won the National Yodeling Championship in 1975 at the Kerrville Folk Festival in Kerrville Texas.A number of Bill's songs have been recorded by other artists including, Peter, Paul, & Mary, Makem and Clancy, Nanci Griffith, Mason Williams, The Highwaymen, Glen Yarborough, Jerry Jeff Walker, Grandpa Jones, Priscilla Herdman and others. Bill has recorded twenty-two of his own albums, fifteen of which are still in print. Additionally, Bill's songs have been published in four songbooks, If I Were A Word, Then I'd Be A Song, River, Music To Me, The Songs of Bill Staines, and All God's Critters Got A Place In The Choir. Two of the books contain nearly one hundred of Bill's songs. Radio and TV appearances have included A Prairie Home Companion, Mountain Stage, The Good Evening Show and a host of local programs on PBS and network TV. Bill continues to drive over 65,000 miles a year, doing what he loves, bringing music to people.

Printmaker marc Cote "I Rather Wood Cut"; and "In Pen and Pencil" Drawings by Nikolay Cherny and Vladimir Chernyayev
arc Cote is captivated with myths and fables and the way in which these tales draw us in with a pretense of simplicity, only to unfold with layers of delicious commentary on the state of the human condition. In his artwork, he seeks to invoke some of this storytelling spirit that is so deceptively folksy or modest, yet carries with it timeless possibilities for self–reflection. From bestiaries to the Bible, he draws upon evocative literary treatises on morality and life lessons to inform his own pictorial narration. In his woodcuts, etchings, monotypes and sculptural prints, he weaves together imagery from his readings, his childhood memories, and flavorful social history to create motifs that reveal the virtues, vices and victories of invented or borrowed characters.Nikolay Chernyayev, who signs his works as Nikolay Cherny, and Vladimir Chernyaev are twin brothers. They were born in St. Petersburg, Russia. They both started to draw in their early childhood, and were first influenced by, and later studied with, renowned Russian artist Victoria Belakovskaya. They both completed their art education at St. Petersburg Academy of Fine Arts and Industrial Design where they received their BA and MA Degrees. They continued their education at the National Research Institute of Industrial Design in Moscow – a Graduate Course PhD program.Both brothers work in the areas of painting, drawing, and illustration. They participate regularly in various art shows and have won numerous awards and prizes. Works of the artists can be found in private and corporate collections in the USA, Russia, Estonia, German, Czech Republic(Vladimir), and Ukraine. The show "In Pen and Pencil" is the second joint exhibition of Nikolay and Vladimir in the USA. The first exhibition was in 1993, and took place at Framingham Public Library.Nikolay has lived in the USA since 1992. He works in porcelain restorations; calligraphy; book design; and illustrations. He has co-authored a number of art installations, performance events, and decorative art compositions. For a number of years, he has also taught an art course titled Formulas for Drawing.Vladimir still lives in St.Petersburg, Russia.He is Assistant Professor at the St.Petersburg Academy of Fine Art and Industrial Design, of which is is also a graduate. He is a member of the Association of Russian Industrial Designers.

Wolverine Jazz Band
The Wolverine Jazz Band is a seven-piece group that roams over the tradition of American Popular music from the first half of the 20th Century. Dixieland, swing, pop and even a little R&B and Bebop thrown in from time to time keeps the music from stagnating or becoming predictable. Comprised of the top Traditional Jazz musicians in New England, the Wolverines have been successful at festivals and concert appearances throughout the region and nationally as well. Hiro Honshuku Ensemble
"Hiro Honshuku is a man of many parts virtuoso flutist, imaginative composer, capable visual artist and gifted teacher. A composer is always heartened to learn he has been an influence in a musician's life; Hiro has taken what he learned from the Lydian Concept and used it as I had intended it to be used to fashion his own unique voice. Drawing from his experience of growing up in Japan, studying European traditional music, and coming to the jazz idiom as a young man, his music is pan-cultural and compelling." - George RussellHiro Honshuku is a composer, arranger, band leader, flutist who also plays EWI, a synthesizer horn. He writes his music with jazz, blues, funk, and Brazilian rhythms because he wants his music to groove. His harmonic sense is very unique, influenced by George Russell's Lycian Chromatic Concept. Hiro graduated simultaneously from Berklee College of Music and the New England Conservatory. He received Summa Cum Laude for his Diploma of Music at Berklee as a performance major. He received Academic Honors and Distinction in Performance for his Master of Music at the New England Conservatory as a Jazz Composition major. Hiro is currently teaching at Longy School of Music and The New England Institute of Art.Hiro had been a member of late George Russell's Living Time Orchestra. Hiro has also performed with Mike Stern, Dave Liebman, Mick Goodrick, Dave Weckl, Tiger Okoshi, George Garzone, Maria Schneider, Bob Moses, and Tom McKinley. Crafter's Wanted for the 2nd Annual Winter Art & Craft Fair at Framingham Public Library!
The fair is a library fundraiser, is juried, and will take place on Saturday, December 11, 10am-3pm. The application fee is $40.00 and will be refunded if the applicant is not selected. Gordon Bok with Erik Balkey opening
Gordon Bok grew up around the boatyards of Camden, Maine. In his early years, he worked on a variety of vessels - on America's Northeast coast and others - fishing boats, passenger schooners, and as deckhand, mate, and captain of various yachts. On the boats, he learned many tunes, sea songs, stories, legends and ballads from the people he worked with. After high school, he worked on the boats in the summer months while the rest of the year he worked in Philadelphia and other cities as a carpenter and teacher. It was there that he found a thriving folk music scene and began performing. Dissatisfied with the images generally portrayed of people who work on the water, he began to write songs based on the experiences of those he knew - real people whose language was honest, whose feelings were credible. These early works, songs like "Bay of Fundy", began to get attention, as did his rich voice and fluid guitar work. Paul Stookey of the folk trio Peter, Paul, and Mary, produced Gordon's first album for Verve.At a time when folk music was experiencing a great revival, Gordon became a leader in preserving, collecting, creating and sharing a wide variety of rich and intensely beautiful songs of both land and sea. His mastery of both 6- and 12-string guitars added to his already well-developed vocal expression to create an unmistakable style that has carried him through decades of being one of our most cherished folk artists. He has made more that a score of albums, and many other musicians including Archie Fisher, Liam Clancy, and Tommy Makem have recorded his songs. In addition, his music has been used in films and published in folk music anthologies, including Rise Up Singing­ and his own collections, Time and The Flying Snow and One To Sing, One To Haul.

Walk to Prevent Homelessness
The annual Walk to Prevent Homelessness, sponsored by Metrowest Outreach Connection, is scheduled for Sunday, September 26, 12:30-3:00 p.m. from Framingham Centre Common on Edgell Road to Brophy School and back. The one-time grants that Metrowest Outreach Connection gives to families in crisis are critically needed to keep these families out of the shelter system and in stable homes in their communities. 97% of all dollars raised go directly to homelessness prevention in Framingham and surrounding communities.Pledge forms can be downloaded from http://www.mwoconnection.org. You can register on–site at the Framingham Centre Common from 12:30-1:00 p.m. Walk kicks off at 1:00 p.m. There is no minimum amount of pledges to participate, but every walker who raises at least $50 will be entered in a raffle for some great prizes donated by local businesses.
