A Matter of Taste - Annual Wine Tasting Benefit
A Matter of Taste, our wonderful annual wine tasting benefit, is scheduled for Saturday evening, November 6th, 2010 from 7pm to 10 pm. Join us for an elegant evening of delicious food, wine and some of the very best contemporary art in the region. For many, this event is a perfect introduction to the Danforth Museum of Art. Visitors are able to see outstanding exhibitions of contemporary artwork, as well as selections from our permanent collection, while sampling select wines from around the world. Whether comparing 19th century painting to 20th century installation, or chardonnay to merlot, this event reminds us that an individual's response is always personal. The sampling of wines perfectly illustrates that there is no one correct response in visiting the Museum. As with so much else, art is a matter of taste and our mix of exhibitions always has much to offer.

Toe Jam Puppet Band
The Toe Jam Puppet Band offers a special brand of hands-on children's entertainment that grown-ups can actually enjoy. The performance is very active, encouraging kids and parents to sing and dance along with the band as they entertain with a unique combination of original songs, masterful shadow puppetry, storytelling and just plain old good fun.The Toe Jam Puppet Band was founded in 2000 when friends and big kids Tom Poitras and Vinny Lovegrove decided to combine their diverse backgrounds in music, songwriting, scenic artistry and puppetry. The goal of the band is to offer a unique brand of interactive children's entertainment that is "fabulicious", encouraging kids and their grown ups to giggle, dance and be silly together. With sponsorship from the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (MSPCC), the Toe Jam Puppet Band released their first CD, aptly titled The First CD, in April 2002. Featuring 14 original songs, the CD seeks to replicate and bring to a wider audience the nurturing hands-on interactivity of the weekly playgroup experience that has made them so well loved by children and parents in Southeastern, Massachusetts. January 2004 brought the release of Toe Jam's second CD, Dance Party. The CD features songs that have become popular favorites at their live shows. All three of the band's studio recordings seamlessly retain the interactive nature of their popular live shows which are very active, encouraging kids and parents to sing and dance along with the band as they entertain with a unique combination of original songs, masterful shadow puppetry, storytelling and pure FUN. The dynamic group is great with kids, but best when parents are having fun with their little ones. Much to the delight of their legion of little fans, the Toe Jam Puppet Band released their third studio CD in 2008, Toe Jam in Outer Space. The newest CD represents Toe Jam's most ambitious journey in the recording studio to date, with 15 original songs, spanning several musical genres such as Rock 'n' Roll ('Moon Rock', 'We Are the New Planets,') Funk ('Space Bump,' 'Ed & Edna Live on Sedna,') Banjo Punk ('The Bathroom Dance,') Country ('Lost In Outer Space,') and a Jump Blues song, ('Sideways Boogie Woogie.') Guest performers, both young and old, were invited into the recording sessions to explore what they heard in the songs, and in turn contributed to the big and little kid view of our ever-changing universe.

The Love Dogs
Take one red-hot horn section - we're talkin' alto, tenor, baritone saxes and trombone - down and dirty. Add liberal amounts of barrelhouse boogie-woogie piano and stinging Fender guitar. Pour over a funky and swinging rhythm section that Blues Review magazine called "the best in the business", and top it all off with a crazy and charismatic front man with one of the biggest blues voices around. Season with a few years on the road tearing up juke joints, festivals and concert halls across the U.S. and Canada and on both sides of the Atlantic. Sound tasty? It's a recipe for music and mayhem, for intensity and irreverence; it's THE LOVE DOGS. Amazing Things Arts Center, 160 Hollis St., Framingham, MA, phone: (508) 405-2787.

Three Hundred Years of Melody: Stephen James, Piano & Peter Zay, Cello
Each of the four pieces on this program - by Bach, Schubert, Prokofiev and award winning local composer Stephen James - was written roughly 100 years apart, beginning with the Bach Gamba Sonata in G. They belong to different countries: Germany, Russia and the U. S., and to different historical periods, yet each of these works is ultimately about melodic and harmonic beauty. From the complex textures of the baroque gamba sonata to the lyricism of Schubert; from the post-romantic Prokofiev to neo-romantic piano pieces by Dr. James, these are tunes meant to tug at your heart strings and maybe even get your toes tapping. The gorgeous sound of cellist Peter Zay, now Principal Cellist of the Plymouth Philharmonic and a regular performer in concerts in New England and Europe, is well suited to this music and joins with the lyricism of pianist/composer Stephen James, who has performed on many concert series in New England including the Tanglewood Music Center Chamber Series and the WICN Radio concert series at Mechanics Hall. Amazing Things Arts Center, 160 Hollis St., Framingham, MA, phone: (508) 405-2787.

New England Americana Festival presents: Swinging Steaks with John Colvert
A five-man band out of Boston, MA, Swinging Steaks are among the originators of the current roots rock/ alt.country movement. Fueled by dual singer/songwriters Jamie Walker and Tim Giovanniello, the group's material explores a rich diversity of musical Americana from full tilt rockers to mandolin-driven melodies and soulful ballads.John Colvert's song lyrics are sparse but the stories speak a truth that is impossible to ignore. The core of his songs are derived from his own personal loves and tragedies; combined with his spirited imagination, the sum equals unforgettable story songs that bring the listener along for the drive on Colvert's musical journey.
