Lecture: Timothy Barringer: Transatlantic Landscapes
2:00pm-3:30pmThe histories of American and British art have often been told as isolated narratives of two national schools rooted in their own soil. This presentation focuses on stylistic, iconographic, and historical comparisons to suggest that transatlantic dialogue -- by way of Constable and Kensett -- is a key to understanding art in the Anglophone world. Tim Barringer is Paul Mellon Professor of the History of Art at Yale University. His books include Reading the Pre-Raphaelites (1999; 2012) and Men at Work: Art and Labour in Victorian Britain (2005). With colleagues he co-authored American Sublime, and co-edited Colonialism and the Object, Art and the British Empire, Writing the Pre-Raphaelites and Art and Emancipation in Jamaica. He was co-curator of Pre-Raphaelites: Victorian Avant-Garde and of Pastures Green and Dark, Satanic Mills. He is co-curator, with Elizabeth Kornhauser, of Thomas Cole's Journey: Atlantic Crossings (Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York and National Gallery, London, 2018).

Film Series: A Grand Tour; "The Talented Mr. Ripley"
6:30pm-8:30pm(Dir., Anthony Minghella, 1999)An impulsive young "nobody" is enlisted to convince the scion of a wealthy family to return to America. Thus begins a chain of deception with dire consequences. Based on the novel by Patricia Highsmith, this psychological thriller matches Tom Ripley's passions to the dramatic landscapes of Italy's great tourist destinations. The Davis spring film series considers the "Grand Tour" -- a rite of passage for young aristocrats (men, and some women) coming of cultural age from the mid-17th through the mid-19th century. The Grand Tour itinerary linked passion for touristic adventure to the cultural legacies of classical antiquity and the Renaissance, informed tastes in art and collecting, and reinforced notions of class status and empire. These four films vary in source material, genre, and time period, from modern psychological horror to classic romantic comedy, yet have one thing in common -- a life-changing visit to Italy, though perhaps not as "grand" as expected.Generously supported by the Davis Museum Film Program Gift.

Heritage Chorale Sings "Elijah"
An exciting concert experience in Framingham. Join Heritage Chorale, Maestro John Finney, full orchestra, and professional soloists (featuring Philip Lima as Elijah), for the biblical story of the fiery prophet, sung in the English setting by Mendelssohn himself. Soloists sing the words of the characters (King Ahab, Queen Jezebel, and more) and the chorus narrates and sings the parts of large groups such as the followers of the demon god Baal. Elijah brings drought to the land, challenges the Baal worshipers to a competition of the gods,is chased by an angry mob and finally goes to heaven in a fiery chariot. The musical setting of "Elijah" is so dramatic it will take your breath away. Families with older children will enjoy this.Parking is free and plentiful. Join us for a post-concert receptionKeefe Tech HS750 Winter St, FraminghamMay 13, 7:30pm508-270-3999
