Adria Arch: On the Mark (at Danforth Museum)
Exhibit, Gallery Talk and Opening Reception- Sunday, May 15, 2010 at Danforth Museum. Gallery Talk begins at 3:00pm, (followed by opening reception which ends at 5:00pm). For this exhibit Arch's inspiration came from looking at her son's discarded high school notebooks hoping to catch a glimpse of his inner world. Through this search she discovered pages of exquisite, tiny geometrical drawings sandwiched between lecture notes, sprinkled in margins and crammed edge to edge on back covers. Created in the unselfconscious state typical of doodlers, the shapes seemed to represent a secret, indecipherable language. She realized that these doodles could be geometric diagrams, hieroglyphs, or pictographs -some kind of mysterious language or alphabet. In an effort to decipher these shapes, she began to incorporate them as compositional elements in her work. The viewer can walk into a dimensional space where the symbols spin, float or twirl. Some of her pieces are doors, others windows. They are all portals. She continues to use these symbols because they are a joyous and mysterious language that is somehow both deeply personal and universal. Members: Free, Children Under 17: Free, Adults: $11, Seniors: $9, Students: $8. Exhibit runs May 4, 2011 through June 5, 2011 at Danforth Museum of Art, 123 Union Ave., Framingham, MA 01702. For more information phone (508) 620-0050 or visit website.

Elizabeth Keithline: ''Smarter, Faster, Higher'' (at Danforth Museum)
Human beings are biologically programmed to evolve – to become "Smarter, Faster, Higher". Technology has given us new tools with which to accomplish this end. Simply by opening a laptop we create the potential to increase our mental capacity. However, as far as we may seem to have come from our roots in the natural world, technology mirrors nature in the way it evolves using replication. Smarter, Faster, Higher explores this idea by drawing the viewer into a current of figures that traverse the Swartz gallery. Using a wire weaving technique that she has employed since 1990, Elizabeth Keithline, in collaboration with her husband Jeff, arrays an installation of woven wire human beings and wire trees. Some of the figures are frozen in a crawl, some in a walk, and some in a run as they spread out across the gallery.
