FRAMINGHAM, MA -- Here's what's happening at the Callahan this month:

Support Groups at Callahan Senior Center - Bereavement Support Group: Mondays, September 10, 17 & 24 at 10:00 am. Center closed on Labor Day, September 3. Caregivers’ Support Group: Tuesday, September 11 at 1:00 pm. (Please call the Center at 508-532-5980 if you are interested in participating this group but can only attend in the evening.) Chronic Illness Disease Management Group: Monday, September 17 at 10:00 am. (This is a six-week program.) Diabetes Support Group: Tuesday, September 25 at 10:00 am. Grandparent Support Group: Please call Center for date and time. Low Vision Group: Friday, September 21 at 1:00 - 3:00 pm. Massage Therapy: Thursday, September 6, by appt. only.
Parkinson’s Support Group: Tuesday, September 18 at 1:30 pm. Podiatry: Thursday, September 13 from 12:30 pm to 4:15 pm, by appt. only. Stroke Survivors’ Support Group: Monday, September 10 at 1:00 pm. Center closed on Labor Day, September 3.

BLOOD PRESSURE CLINIC FOR SEPTEMBER - Wednesdays, September 5, 12, 19 &26 from 9:30—11am & 12—1 pm

Healing Partners Bereavement Support Group - Pain shared is a pain halved….Joy shared is a joy doubled. - C.S. Lewis (after the death of his wife) Join with others who are grieving the loss of a spouse, brother, sister, parent or friend. Every Monday, from 10-11:30 AM gather with others to share experience and find comfort and connection. MetroWest Homecare and Hospice is partnering with Jewish Family Service of Metrowest and the Callahan Center to create this opportunity for you. This unique group is co-facilitated by both a social worker and a chaplain. No charge and no pre-registration is required. All who are grieving are welcome. Chronic Illness Disease Management Group Information and Sign up on Monday, September 10th at 10 AM. Are you living with heart disease, COPD, diabetes or cancer? Are you a stroke survivor? Wondering how to live the best life you can? The Arthritis Foundation is joining with Healing Partners to offer you a 6 week evidence based group pioneered by Stanford University. Thanks to MetroWest Community Health Care Foundation you can learn the tools to make every day easier, how to deal with pain, communicate your needs to those around you and reconnect to yourself before all these illnesses and doctors’ appointments entered your life. Find out about it on the 10th and sign up for a better, easier life. The group will begin September 17th and a commitment for all six weeks is required. PRESCRIPTION ADVANTAGE Now Has Continuous Open Enrollment! Come and learn more about how to Save $$$ on your prescription drugs! Thursday, September 20th at 10:00 am at Callahan Center. (Please call the Center at 508-532-5980 to reserve a spot, as space is limited) Prescription Advantage is the state-sponsored plan that is free for people over 65 with Medicare (or other creditable) drug coverage and annual income below $30,631 (single) or $41,071 (married). Disabled residents under 65 with lower incomes may also qualify. Assets are not considered for eligibility. Depending on income, this program will: pay ALL or part of your Medicare Part D premium, pay your Part D annual deductible, give you coverage in the Part D “gap” (or “donut hole”), limit your annual out-of- pocket spending. No cost to join! * Savings to be had! $200. annual enrollment fee for incomes between $30,631-$51,050 (single) & $41,071-$68,450 (married).

Framingham Board of Health “Screening Days” - The Framingham Board of Health (BoH) is pleased to announce, that starting this Fall 2007, we will begin a new and exciting health screening initiative for Framingham residents, funded through a grant from the MetroWest Community Health Care Foundation.
On Tuesday, September 4th from 9:30 am—12:20 pm, the Framingham BoH will hold the first of their “Screening Days” at Callahan Center, which will include Cardiovascular Screening, Cholesterol Tests and Skin / Facial Cancer Screenings. The Blood Pressure Clinic will continue to be held on Wednesdays at the Callahan Center from 9:30-11:00 am and 12:00-1:00 pm. These health screenings will take place at various locations every other month. Keep your eye on the MetroWest Daily News, Callahan Newsletter, Town of Framingham Web page and the Pearl Street Framingham Public Library, for specific locations and times when this event will be held. Art Instruction at Callahan—Kathleen Wirtanen, Art Instructor, will return to the Callahan Center for another 8-week art course. In this class, we will continue to learn the basics of color mixing and watercolor techniques. Classes will start on Thursday, September 20th from 10:00 –11:00 am and will run every Thursday through November 8th. The cost per class will be $3.00 per person. Please bring your supplies from the last class. If interested, please call the Center at 508-532-5980 to register.

PROPERTY TAX RELIEF PROGRAM - The Property Tax Relief Program is still accepting registrations. If you qualify for this program, you may work 100 hours and get a credit of $750.00 off your property taxes. Please call Janice McIntyre at 508-532-5980, ext. 4106 for an appointment to see if you qualify for this worthwhile program.

Wednesday, September 12th at 10:00 am - Veterans’ Services Presentation with Paul Raffa, Director of Framingham Veterans’ Services. Paul will be discussing what benefits veterans, spouses of veterans and widow(er)s are eligible for. This will be followed by a Q&A session. Thursday, September 13th at 10:00 am - Framingham Board of Health “Walking Program” Presentation. Charlotte Trubiani, Sr. Public Health Nurse for the Framingham Board of Health, will be at Callahan to present the benefits of this ‘walking program’ and will explain how seniors can participate. For more details and sign-up, see page 10 of this newsletter.
Sunday, September 30th at 2:00 pm - Callahan’s ‘2nd’ Anniversary at Union Avenue - Please join us on when the Friends of Callahan will, once again, sponsor a musical concert to celebrate the Center’s 2nd year at Union Avenue. Hal Katzman and Larry Nelson will be back with their musical extravaganza of “Broadway Tunes”. Refreshments will be served. October 3 - Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn and Johannes Vermeer, two of the greatest painters the world has known. Their fame comes from their beloved masterpieces of art. Come learn and see some of the wonderful examples of their works. Enjoy the drama and connect with the masters, Rembrandt and the special quiet of Vermeer.

JOB OPPORTUNITIES AT CALLAHAN CENTER -
Position: Bi-Lingual Outreach Aide
Part-time/ 19 hours/ $313.88 weekly
Major Responsibilities: Oversees and ensures that Framingham elders living in the town of Framingham are represented and made aware of programs and services. The outreach aide must adhere to the established policies and procedures for the Town of Framingham. Educates and assists clients in applying for entitlement benefits. Informs clients of retirement housing, nursing homes, assisted care living, private and subsidized housing. Monitors medical and emotional needs of clients. Refers clients to appropriate agencies. Assists with securing medical escorts. Attends seminars and informational meetings. Works cooperatively with other outreach staff and attends Center staff meetings. Must have an associates’ degree or 3-5 years of experience working within a senior population position. Bi-lingual in English/Spanish is required for this position. Must own car and have MA Driver’s License.
Position: Computer Center Coordinator
Part-time: 15-18 hours per week/ $16.00/hourly
Major Responsibilities: This Computer Center Coordinator works under the supervision of the Director in planning and implementing his/her responsibilities towards the Callahan Computer Learning Center. Plans and administers the training of volunteer instructors in the field of computers. Creates a curriculum directed to a senior population. Counsels seniors interested in the field of computers for re-entry into the job market. The Computer Center Coordinator will also research and share up-to-date information about the most current application of computers in a changing business world and will establish an awareness of the market trends in regard to computer jobs. Promotes computer literacy within the Callahan Senior Center, and promotes the Center to outside sources with an eye towards future hardware/software donations. Associate’s Degree in computer science with two years of experience in the field. Relevant experience in computers can be substituted on a two-to-one year basis. Must have managerial experience. Some teaching experience preferred. Candidate should be able to relate to senior adults, both as staff and as students.
