December 09, 2007  (10:18:58 EST)

FRAMINGHAM,MA -The Massachusetts Office on Disability and the Stavros Center for Independent Living & the MetroWest Center for Independent Living are hosting regional meetings on Emergency Planning for People with Disabilities.

Date: December 13, 2007
Time: 2:00pm - 4:00pm
MetroWest Center for Independent Living
280 Irving Street Framingham, MA 01702

OR

Date: December 11, 2007
Time: 1 - 4 pm
Location: Sullivan Safety Complex, 1212 Carew Street, Springfield, MA

Bringing people with disabilities together with local emergency preparedness professionals will provide a forum for the exchange of information and ideas, and will enable us to build a regional network to ensure that people with disabilities have the assistance they need when emergencies occur:

- An ice storm leaves the region without electricity.
- Fire in an industrial plant forces evacuation of surrounding neighborhoods.
- A train jumps the tracks releasing a cloud of toxic chemicals.

Communities across Massachusetts are planning for emergency situations like these: some are natural and others man-made; some require evacuation and others sheltering at home.

Members of the disability community who attend the meeting will learn about emergency response resources and procedures in their local communities and about steps that can be taken personally to prepare for emergency situations. They will also receive an 'Emergency Go Pack' filled with supplies that are useful in an emergency.

ASL interpretation, CART and Spanish translation will be provided. If other accommodations are needed please contact Hollis Cotton at the Massachusetts Office on Disability at 1-800-322-2020.
